Hollywood Shows Up for Election Protection
benefit at The Abbey, West Hollywood

West Hollywood, CA - 10/30/2004 -Event Chairs Actress Alexandra Paul (Baywatch; Saving Emily - airing this week on Lifetime) and producer/manager Daniel Sladek (Dimensions' Tale of the Mummy) turned out a packed house last night at The Abbey in West Hollywood in support of the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law and their Election Protection Project.

Guests attending last nights' event hosted by Abbey Owner David Cooley, included Barry Diller, CAA's Bryan Lourd, American Comedy Award winner Kathleen Madigan (Last Comic Standing) who entertained, Daphne Zuniga (American Dream), Eric Christian Olsen (Tru Calling, Cellular) and actress Maggie Lawson, director Miguel Arteta (The Good Girl), ABC's Quinn Taylor, series creator / producer William Bickley (Perfect Strangers, Family Matters, Step by Step), John Wesley Ship (Dawson's Creek), Michael Deluise (NYPD Blue), producer Jay Polstein (Frida) and producer Mimi Polk Gitlin (Thelma & Louise).

In a rare public acknowledgement of their philanthropy, Paul and Susan Newman, via Newman's Own, have made a significant financial contribution to the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law and its Election Protection program. The big announcement of the night was made by Newman family friend and Election Protection activist Kathleen Unger, who stated "The Newman's are very private when it comes to their philanthropic gifts, however, due to the urgency of supporting the Election Protection hotline, Paul and Susan Newman have elected to go public with this donation with the hope that their gift will inspire others to contribute greatly to the Lawyers' Committee and its' Election Protection project".

Event keynote speaker, Washington D.C. - based Executive Director Barbara Arnwine spoke of the tremendous accomplishments of the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, the non-profit, nonpartisan organization established in 1963 at the request of President John F. Kennedy to involve private attorney's in the effort to insure the civil rights of all Americans. In participation with coalition partners, The Lawyers' Committee will provide 25,000 trained poll monitors to watch for problems and assist voters on the spot in at least 30 states and has circulated more than five million "Voters' Bills of Rights" with state-specific information. The Lawyers' Committee will also staff the 1-866-OUR-VOTE hotine with free, immediate and multi-lingual assistance to help voters who encounter barriers to the ballot box.
